Animis opibusque parati† (Latin), Prepared in Mind and Resources

Animis opibusque parati...translated it means "prepared in mind and resources". If you are from South Carolina, this latin quote should be all to familiar. It will be interesting to see if the staff here, at OutPersonals will approve it. If they have the wisdom to do so, it will be the name of my blogpost. If not, back to the drawing board, as "they" say.

Are you interested in some basic information regarding South Carolina outside of Lindsey Graham? If so, with my first blog entry here, I will attempt to bring it forward. With special thanks to "infoplease/states/southcarolina" and "discoversouthcarolina.com".

Nicknamed, "The Palmetto State", here is a condensed background and history of the 8th State to enter the Union on May 23, 1788.

After extensive explorations of the coast in 1521 by Francisco de Gordillo, the Spanish tried unsuccessfully to establish a colony near present-day Georgetown in 1526, and the French also failed to colonize Parris Island near Fort Royal in 1562. The first English settlement was made in 1670 at Albemarle Point on the Ashley River, but poor conditions drove the settlers to the site of Charleston (originally called Charles Town).

South Carolina became a "crown colony" in 1719, which resulted in the separation from North Carolina in 1729.

The State was the scene of extensive military action during the Revolution and again during the Civil War. The Civil War began in 1861 as South Carolina troops fired on federal Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, and the state was the first to secede from the Union.

Once primarily agricultural, South Carolina today has many large textile and other mills that produce several times the output of its farms in cash value. Charleston makes asbestos, wood, pulp, steel products, chemicals, machinery, and apparel.

Farms have become fewer but larger in recent years. South Carolina ranks second in peach production after California. Other top agricultural commodities include broilers (31.5% of total state farm receipts), turkeys, greenhouse products, cattle and calves, and corn. One of only two commercial tea plantations in America is 20 miles South of Charleston on Wadmalaw Island.

Points of interest include Fort Sumter National Monument, Fort Moultrie, Fort Johnson, and aircraft carrier USS Yorktown in Charleston Harbor; the Middleton, Magnolia, and Cypress Gardens in Charleston; Cowpens National Battlefield; the Hilton Head resorts; and the Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Garden in Columbia.

Motto(s): Dum spiro spero* (Latin), While I Breathe I Hope
Animis opibusque parati† (Latin), Prepared in Mind and Resources
State song(s): ""Carolina";
"South Carolina On My Mind"
Official language English
Demonym South Carolinian
Capital Columbia
Largest city Charleston
Largest metro Greenville

In my opinion, it is the best place to hang out during Spring Break or any other time of the year..."Carolina on my mind".

Albeit it was in North Carolina, the ferry ride from Ocracoke to Cedar Island was an amazing adventure in route to your state. Outstanding summer adventure driving the coastline to our final stop in Savannah. I definitely will be returning to several pinned points that we favorited.
Thanks SCBrooke!

Love the state's history... Tomorrow I will go up and get a picture of an historical document from your state produced right after the war between the States.

Great job on your first blog, Brooke. Interesting history of South Carolina. The beach picture and your weather report makes we want to head there right now.

What little of the Carolinas I've been lucky enough to see is amazingly beautiful. I especially love the mountains. Do the Smokies extend as far as S. Carolina? I've always been a little confused as to where the Blue Ridge mountains leave off and the Smokies begin.....or maybe they are all the Blue Ridge? I actually love all of the eastern Southern states. The scenery is out of this world. Being a born and bred Yankee, though, I have a real problem with the soupy heat!!

The history is "full flavored", especially during the War Between the States period.

I know they extend into the Carolinas. The Smokies are parts located in Tennessee. Below from the Blue Ridge Parkway infor site.

"Blue Ridge, also called Blue Ridge Mountains, segment of the Appalachian Mountains in the United States. The mountains extend southwestward for 615 miles (990 km) from Carlisle, Pennsylvania, through parts of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, to Mount Oglethorpe, Georgia."

It is usually 80 percent or higher 24/7 at any of the barrier islands. I agree, coping with the humidity is not for the meek.

I thought I was seeing things or the worse case scenario, someone lifted your profile/picture. Normally I don't comment on these so called "blogs", but this will be an exception. Brooke, I passed through South Carolina July, 2011, staying one night in Charleston. Linda and I stopped at four different places besides the Drury there in downtown. We both said over and over that when we go back to SC, we will find a person who "isn't nice" if that is possible. Well, it is 2019, I haven't been back yet, but I bet the high caliber of manors of the folks that live there has not changed, if anything more stellar. The people that make up a community/state are the best or true indicators of the whole. Thanks for the post Brooke.

Might be an interesting retrospective view with the possibility of doing some micro views of historical points vs the broad stroked painted with glittering generalities.

From the looks of things, the tourist industry of South Carolina has a new spokesperson. Are you sure you can accommodate all of us?
No doubt, one of these days I will be re-checking those favorite spots there.
