Shrove Tuesday

"Shrove" is the past tense of "shrive," which means to obtain absolution from sin. Shriving can be done through confession and penance. Historically, English Christians were supposed to do some shriving before Lent. Shrove Monday is part of the Shrovetide celebrations that encompass the days before Lent. It takes place on the Monday before Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of Lent. In between these two days is Shrove Tuesday.

In Denmark, Shrove Monday is also part of a Carnival celebration called Fastelavn, where processions take place and costumes are worn. The day is now geared more towards children. Fastelavnsboller is a food commonly eaten on the day. It is a round sweet bun with icing that may be filled with pastry cream or whipped cream.

Pączki have been eaten in Poland since at least the Middle Ages. The singular word for them is pączek, but most English speakers use "pączki" for both singular and plural. In Poland they are often eaten on Fat Thursday, the last Thursday before Ash Wednesday. Pączki were traditionally made at this time to use up foods that were forbidden to be eaten during Lent, such as lard, sugar, eggs, and fruit.

Ash Wednesday, March 6th this year, is the first day of Lent, observed in many Western Christian denominations. It takes place forty-six days before Easter, and may take place anytime between February 4 and March 10. Depending on denomination, it is observed with religious services, a ritual with ashes, and fasting.

In ancient times, ashes were used to express grief. The sprinkling of ashes on heads takes place in numerous places in the Bible. Christians continued the tradition as a sign of repentance. Christians in Western Europe were receiving ashes on the first day of Lent by the tenth century, although not yet in the Catholic Church. In 1091, the Catholic Church joined the ritual, after Pope Urban II ordered ashes should be given in Rome. The day soon came to be called Ash Wednesday. Some denominations stopped giving out ashes after the Reformation, sometime around 1600, but still observed Ash Wednesday as the first day of Lent.

Only the penitent man will pass.... Penitent is humble..... What must a penitent man do to pass?-------has been emblazoned in my mind from the movie Indiana Jones The Last Crusade where Indiana began to figure out the first trap. When Indy realized that a penitent man was one who was on his knees before God.

I am reminded of what Mother Teresa said, “At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by "I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless, and you took me in.”

You have until dawn Wednesday to go out and grab one... Only one too! I am lucky in some aspects... I have to be careful and watch that I don't crash with too low a blood sugar.
