Recent Flooding

Are these white capped waves on a wind swept lake?

Nooo.... this is along highway 18 just north of us.

The highway is barely above the water between Mason & Spencer.

The farmsteads are on "high ground" in a water swept plain where corn will be planted in a few months.

as the white capped waves break alongside the roadway.

We might be having that problem in the near future in Washoe Valley with Washoe Lake, which is between Reno and Carson City. In some places the water is up to the highway of 580/395 and the snow has not melted yet. There will be plenty of more water when it does. In 1997 the highway was covered by water and closed. People traveling from Reno to Carson had to go around.

We've had a bit of a respite here with a few cooler days, but there's plenty of water to run off before we even think of drying out.

Sometimes I think the corps is asleep at the helm allowing waterlevels to get way out of hand before doing anything about them. most dams were built to prevent flooding so if you know you've got a shitload of run off on the way why not drop the levels BEFORE it gets there?

In most areas 3-4 feet some 5-6' This entire area at one time was the bottom of an ancient lake bed that covered about 1/3 of Iowa after the glaciers melted. Th lake finally broke through the mound of earth and rock dam that built up in front of the glaciers down by Huxley just north of Des Moines draining the state but leaving behind a marshland.

That moist Gulf air can bring down torrents of rain in a matter of minutes.

Man, you must have had a very fast snowmelt to accumulate that much water. Hope it doesn't get any worse. Those are some great pictures to be kept in the family album.

We are to warm up this week into the 50's with rain next weekend... We may need to build an Ark if we are not careful. So much depend on how fast we can get rid of it. The river is bank full and moving fast heading south to the Mississippi.
