From Chat a few Knights Ago

A few nights ago in chat Elton John came up as a talking point... Then diverged to "Is he really a 'Sir Elton'?or not?" after a quick Google we had the correct answer.

Yes, On February 24, 1998 Elton Hercules John became Sir Elton kneeling before HRH Elizabeth II in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace. He bought his parents and partner, David Furnish, to watch him kneel before the Queen and be dubbed on each shoulder with the investiture sword. He said the Queen had apologised for interrupting his busy schedule.

"She said I must be terribly busy," he added. "But this is not the sort of thing you put off. I flew back from LA yesterday and I'm going to Australia on Thursday, but there was no way I would miss this."

Happy Twentieth Sir Elton!

"I've had a long career and worked hard," he said outside the Palace. "But I think the turning point came in 1990 when I got sober and started to do some charity work, particularly for the Aids problem. A knighthood is the icing on the cake."

His emotional performance of his re-written "Candle in the Wind" sold 33 million copies making it the world's top-selling single and has raised £20m ($33.4m) for Diana's memorial fund.

Holding up the knighthood insignia, he said: "I love my country and to be recognised in such a way - I can't think of anything better."

Amazingly Sir Elton, renowned for his flamboyant outfits, was soberly dressed in a formal suit for his investiture.

Yes indeed, congratulations Sir Elton, a very deserving recipient of the title of Knight.

I admire him as a performer, support some of the groups he does, some other causes I wish he wouldn't support. I guess that is why we are all born unique and who we are.

He was quite a pioneer when it came to being pretty obviously gay in his stage and video personas. He really does seem like a good person. Of course, many are saddened that he has decided to give up touring but like anyone in any profession there comes a time when it just doesn't bring the joy it once did.
I suspect a lot of us tend to think of celebrities as they were the last time we saw them, and we don't realise that they have aged and changed over time

The musical legacy he has left behind will last for centuries with our ability for recording and preserving him. His charitable works will also leave a shining beacon for the future as well.

His career has spanned a long time and the paths he's been down don't always converge with the paths we take but to HRH he deserved her thanks for what he has done for the UK.
