Having trouble finding final numbers on Burning Man I did find an article saying the Burning Man promoters have reached an agreement with the BLM who is in of the Black Rock Playa, to cap the attendance of the event at 80,000. Last year Burning Man had 100,000 on the playa. They do provide security and Burning Man does hire their own staff of security which is made up of officers from different agencies; Nevada Highway Patrol (State Troopers), sheriff deputies from different counties, police officers from different cities, Tribal Police and I have even heard of a few federal cops volunteering their time. Not only do the cops come from Nevada but also from California, Utah, Arizona and other neighboring states. They do set up a command post and have a basic set of laws they enforce plus they do patrol the event area. Black Rock Desert is US government land so federal laws have to be enforced. Crimes of violence, sexual assault, theft and drug dealers are handled. Marijuana use is more or less tolerated now. Medical staff is donated and volunteered from doctors; M.D.s and specialist. Also PAs (physician assistants), nurse practitioners, paramedics, nurses and other medical staff and have medical tents set up. There are paramedics with ambulances and also a med-i-vac care flight helicopter available. There are many weird situations with outlandish costumes and even total nudity and sex acts in public. It was once frequented artistic people who brought their sculptures and creations to display and they still go to Burning Man. There was one reported death this year and some dust storms. They even had a 747 jet airliner there on display this year. There were news reports of the plane being escorted out the NHP (Nevada Highway Patrol) at 25 MPH and did restrict traffic and cause a back up. Glad I wasn't there! I tried to find pics just from 20 but pics from previous years got mixed on the same page. It looks like Burning Man will be going on for years to come. |
