The Goodyear Blimp Is Dead

Noooo! Not like the Hindenburg!

The last of Goodyear's fleet of blimps, the California-based Spirit of Innovation, was deflated for the final time today, flattening into oblivion a tradition that stretched back to the launch of the Pilgrim in 1925.

Fear not, airship fans: Goodyear's familiar blue-and-gold form will still be floating the friendly skies-just in the form of semi-rigid dirigibles. The Spirit of Innovation's replacement, Wingfoot Two, will appear pretty much the same, but there's a technical difference between a semi-rigid dirigible, which retains its structure even when the helium is released, and a blimp, which goes flat.
The new models are more maneuverable, faster, quieter, and larger-at 246 feet, the modern dirigibles are 50 feet longer than the old blimps-and, with three engines instead of two, can hit 70 mph or more.

Goodyear still plans to refer to the new airships as "blimps," probably for the sake of continuity (and ease). And while you'll know better, probably best not to get too pedantic about things-nobody wants to be the "technically, it's a semi-rigid dirigible!" guy at the party.

A Good Year "blimp" is rarely seen over Canada, but there have been a few visits, the latest to Vancouver, BC in July 2016.

I do believe Met Life does have a blimp. I remember seeing the ads for then showing it, but as an old guy the mind sometimes plays tricks on me. I once saw the Goodyear Blimp flying over town, and it actually touched down at the local international airport for an over night stay, made the local paper as well as all three local news networks at the time. The trouble with Blimps, is as you noted they are slow so take awhile to get anywhere. I think the time I saw the beast was because they were on their way back from an event ( most likely a football game) in Buffalo NY. Headed to the Cleveland Ohio area, where at one time I think they housed the East Coast ships for the Co. (yeah, there was more than one Goodyear Blimp) Anywho, Because of the weather they couldn't reach their home hanger and had to lay over here in town. A bit of excitement to our otherwise drab lives.

LOL - No one will be able to tell the difference.

There is a Company in Canada that is building such giant new dirigibles to reach areas with no roads in the north to bring in supplies and equipment to communities and mines.

XOXO

Jack

Take the road less travelled.

Yes Met Life does have a blimp. It's probably one of the semi-rigid ones. Been over my place in north west New Jersey a few times. Has a big picture of Snoopy on the front sides.

Now that would be cooliez. We once had a bright yellow biplane stop over at the local airport that caught our attention and an old WW2 plane too.

I believe there is a real use for them in the aviation area since the Hindenburg disaster is now relegated to a blip in history.

Living close to Notre Dame University, we tend to get a visit from the Goodyear blimp often. Had the privilege of winning a ride one year. That was great!
Had a blimp ride me and he also deflated when he came.
Now that could be one hell of an experience!

That would seem to be a good source for advertising and entertainment.
