That's great you are having such an awesome trip!

You are in a beautiful part of your country, that I have traveled extensively on my way to Arizona. I know where you stopped on the continental divide. The big hill south of Helena really taxes a vehicle. I had no problem with my carbureted 454 on any of the hills, but it is advisable to tune for higher altitude driving. Good luck with the mechanic, and have a great time driving across the lava flows in Idaho, and HOT central Washington. I just got back from a short camping trip with a friend. We had to return early because the hot water heater sprung a big leak and flooded the floor of the trailer. I am currently in the process of attempting to repair it as there i s no money for a replacement. Thanks for the update, Noah; always good to hear from you.

Noah, your symptom description of "hinky" for the Titanic engine performance was accurate enough for me to diagnose the problem from a distance. Montana sells 85 octane gasoline, which is meant to be used only in newer engines with sophisticated computerized timing. In the older engines, stick with a minimum octane of 87 or higher, and the old Chev will purr like a kitten on the flats, and growl like a tiger on the hills.
