True Spirit

I am usually not the kind of guy to talk about my good deeds. Not that there are a lot of them but talking about doing a good deed negates the deed in my book. I also do not like Hallmark blogging but I am about to Hallmark blog. Somehow today I caught the true spirit of the season.

As I got to my local grocery I noticed the framework to the Salvation Army Red Kettle. It was almost noon on Sunday and quite a few people were out. I saw that there was a Dollar Tree 4 doors from the grocer so I ran in determined to help out a worthy cause. I bought a red plastic bucket and a door decoration that had 3 bells hanging. I went back to the framework and used a broken shoelace from my coat pocket to attach the bucket. I started ringing the door decoration for all it was worth.

People dropped some bills into the bucket. "Bless you," they told me. I rang harder. I decided to act excited to be there and used my skills as a solo shower dancer in public for the first time to entertain the masses. People asked me if that kept me from getting cold. "Sure buddy, just keep dropping the money." People were shopping after church and seemed to be very generous. I was glad I came along when I did to have some small part in making Christmas better for those in my community.

All good things must come to an end. I looked across the parking lot and saw a large (I think) woman in stretch pants carrying a trumpet and a red metal kettle. I quickly scooped most of the bills up and slid them into my pocket before Pat approached me saying "Hi, I didn't think anybody was supposed to be here yet." I explained that somebody must have gotten their signals crossed and handed over the contents still left in my bucket. Mostly change. "It has been kinda slow," I told her/him before speeding outta Dodge.

I encourage everyone to find a charity and volunteer over the holidays. I can't tell you how good it made me feel. $!23.00 good to be exact.

Merry Fucking Christmas.
